REACh is the European Union legislation for the Registration, Evaluation and Authorization of Chemicals. The pre-registration deadline has passed; substances are currently assigned to Substance Information Exchange Fora (SIEF).
GHS is the Globally Harmonized System for Safety Data Sheet content. Adopted by the United Nations in 2002, it is now in its fourth revision published in 2011. The new SDS format became law 1 June 2007, EU enforcement began late 2009.
Classification, Labeling & Packaging regulations for the EU went into effect Jan 2009; these include pictograms new to most users. Items peculiar to the EU are here. Substances will be self-classified until SIEFs agree on classification (by Nov 2010).
A Chemical Safety Report according will be needed for substances in the SVHC Candidate List. Inclusion carries other immediate obligations as well. This will have a significant impact on Industrial Hygiene as well.
